What I Checked Out in August

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

I checked this out because it’s a psychological thriller and it takes place partly in Minnesota. I liked the non-sequential writing style and the unexpected twist at the end. The audiobook is narrated by Lindy Nettleton, Johnny Heller, Tom Taylorson, and Andi Arndt.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

I checked out the audiobook on Libby and ended up returning it after about an hour. I definitely want to read this book at some point, but the audiobook narrator was a little too soothing and it was difficult to stay awake.

Bowl by Lukas Volger

I made three recipes from this book and all of them were amazing.

The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang

I read this in one sitting and absolutely loved it. It is just a delightful story and I love Jen Wang’s art. She’s the same artist who did In Real Life with Cory Doctorow.

My American Duchess by Eloisa James

I checked out the audiobook, read by Kate Reading. It’s the first book I’ve read by Eloisa James and I will definitely read more from her.

The Ideal Team Player by Patrick Lencioni

I checked out The Five Dysfunctions of a Team last month and enjoyed it immensely (I’ve already recommended it to two people). It helped me become more self-aware of my professional behavior. I picked up this book recently, which is written in the same format. Easily some of the most enjoyable and helpful non-fiction I’ve read.

Lights Out

My husband and I were on a horror movie kick, so I picked up this one and the following movie without knowing much about them. This one wasn’t too bad.

The Visit

This movie was weird.

The Village

I had never seen The Village, but I occasionally enjoy M. Night Shyamalan. My husband vehemently defends this movie because he enjoyed it and a lot of people didn’t. I will now be vehemently defending it as well. I loved it.

Unbreakableposterwillis

Unbreakable

Last month, I checked out Split and we loved it. We are interested in seeing Glass when it comes out next year, so we decided to watch Unbreakable. A lot of people have raved about this movie to me, so I went in with high expectations. It was fine, but it did not meet those expectations.

The Girl on the Train

This was a rewatch. I still can’t figure out why they moved the setting from the UK to the US but hired a bunch of actors from the UK.

Hellboy

My husband had never seen it. He enjoyed it, and I think it aged well enough.

Super Troopers 2

I loved Super Troopers in college. I wanted to love this one, but it just made me feel old.

Legend

The movie is really unremarkable, but it was worth it for the look on my husband’s face when I told him halfway into the movie that the two main characters were played by the same actor. Tom Hardy is brilliant.

Ready Player One

I will probably write an entire blog post about this.
